Within the last century women’s rights have come a long way. Thanks to the past feminism movements, women are now allowed to vote, have the option to divorce their partners, the right to have a bank account and be able to work. However, the idea that women enjoy the same rights as men and are completely equal is not true. That is why we need feminism.
In 2016 women still deal with catcalling on a daily basis, women still earn 23% less money than men even with the same education level and women’s sports do not get the same media coverage as men’s sports do. But why is that? It’s because we’re living in a somewhat, patriarchal society.
In Asian countries, girls like Malala are being shot for demanding the right to have an education and female infanticide (the deliberate killing of newborn females) is still being practiced today.
We need feminism because women are still viewed as objects and possessions; they are expected to take their partner’s last name when they get married. Every single girl is told that wearing certain types of clothing or simply walking home at night makes them an “easy target” whereas men are allowed to wear whatever they want and “do” whatever they want. What does that mean in America where, on average, a woman is raped every 6 seconds? Also, more frequent than not, the victim is blamed. Even in a domestic abuse case, people always say “Why did she stay?” rather than “Why did he abuse her?”
Significantly, we need feminism because gender inequality affects us teens the most. Every day at school, it has become common for boys to call other boys “girls” as an insult because females are seen as weak, inferior and hysterical. This creates a negative stigma with being a girl and term such as “dumb blond” are used all the time. When a girl says they are a feminist there are assumed to be angry and vulgar, whereas when a boy says they are feminist they get applauded and praised.
Feminism: the advocacy of women’s rights on the equality of the sexes. Simply, women’s rights. We need feminism to show people that being a female is just as equal to being a male. Just as equal being a woman as a man. Just as equal being a girl as a boy.
